ART IMMERSION PROGRAM IN THE AMAZON
COLOURS – AS CORES
Fabrics can act as an educational tool to tell the story of a place and discuss global environmental concerns. The created textiles focus on local materials found to produce dyes and pigments, exploring the material diversity of a place: The Amazon Rainforest.
The natural colour kingdom of the Amazon is sometimes not obvious at first sight. When you enter the forest everything seems green, but by dyeing the fabrics some of the forest’s hidden and surprising colours could be extracted - such as pink, purple and blue hues from leaves.
Using materials found throughout the program - from soil, bark and tree resin to flowers, fungi, fruit and leaves – ethically sourced silks were hand dyed using the technique of bundle dye. This technique allows for an explorative and fairly intuitive approach to creating pictorial prints of the found materials directly on silk. The dyed fabrics become a map and produce a colour palette along the theme of regeneration.
By understanding and experiencing the found materials in a multisensory way, such as tucumán, açaí and urucum, their story and cultural meaning deepens the material narrative. The silks capture within their fibres the fugitive and colourful richness of the unique experience, location and time of the project.

Textilien können als pädagogisches Mittel dienen, um die Geschichte eines Ortes zu erzählen und globale Umweltprobleme zu diskutieren. Die gestalteten Textilien konzentrieren sich auf lokale Materialien, die zur Herstellung von Farbstoffen und Pigmenten verwendet werden, und untersuchen die Materialvielfalt eines Ortes: Den Amazonasregenwald.
Das natürliche Farbreich des Amazonas ist nicht immer auf den ersten Blick erkennbar. Wenn man den Wald betritt, scheint alles tiefgrün. Erst durch das Einfärben der Stoffe konnten einige der versteckten und unerwarteten Farben des Waldes extrahiert werden - wie z. B. pinke, violette und blaue Schattierungen der Blätter.
Unter Verwendung von Materialien, die überall während des Projektes gefunden worden - von Erde, Rinde und Baumharz bis hin zu Blumen, Pilzen, Früchten und Blättern - wurden ökologisch zertifizierte Seidenstoffe (Peace Silk) aus fairen Produktionsbedingungen von Hand mittels Bundle Dye gefärbt. Diese Technik ermöglicht eine explorative und eher intuitive Herangehensweise an die Erstellung von bildhaften Drucken der gefundenen Objekte direkt auf der Seide. Die gefärbten Stoffe werden zu einer Art Karte und bilden die lokale Farbpalette entlang des Themas der Regeneration ab.
Durch das multisensorische Verstehen und Erleben der gefundenen Materialien, wie Tucumán, Açaí und Urucum während des Projekts, wurde die Geschichte und kulturelle Bedeutung des Materials vertieft. Die Seidenstoffe fangen somit den oft nur flüchtigen Reichtum an Farben ein, der sich aus der einzigartigen Erfahrung, dem Ort und dem Zeitpunkt des Projekts ergibt.
